Internationally acclaimed James “Sparky” Rucker is recognized as a folklorist, historian, musician, storyteller, and author. He has been singing songs and telling stories from the American tradition for over 35 years. Sparky accompanies himself on guitar, banjo, and spoons.
Rhonda Rucker practiced medicine for five years before becoming a full-time folk musician. She is a versatile performer, playing blues harmonica, piano, and banjo and creating wonderful vocal harmonies. Rhonda really shines on harmonica reflecting her study of Sonny Terry’s techniques. She also studied with harmonica wizard Phil Wiggins.
Sparky and Rhonda’s concert performance is a humor-filled journey through 400 years of African-American cultural and folk history. Their music albums include some of the best research and liner notes on the songs or characters’ history available anywhere. It’s like a trip to the library with the research already laid out for you.
Pete Seeger says, … Sparky Rucker is unique! He’ll make you glad to be alive and struggling. Additionally, Rhonda is a talented performer accompanying her husband on harmonica and harmony vocals.”
